How We Spent MOTHER’S DAY 2022
This may be an unpopular belief, but I truly believe that the mother in the most intense season of motherhood should be the one who gets to call the shots on Mother’s Day. I love my mom and yes she still deserved to be celebrated, but she had 32 uncontested years, growing up I don’t remember us celebrating with my grandma, and honestly I am the one in the thick of things mom-wise. What I didn’t want to do it have to cart my baby around to visit the other mothers in my life, celebrating them and doing all the work somehow. Thankfully my mom agrees with this sentiment (even if my siblings don’t) and was happy for me to celebrate with my son and husband. For our family what ended up working best was hanging out with my mother and mother-in-law separately on Saturday and reserving Sunday for myself.
This was my first year to be able to really celebrate Mother’s Day because last year we were in the hospital. So, I was really looking forward to this weekend. My ideal way to celebrate is to be able to sleep in, do something fun as a family, and enjoy my morning coffee in peace. We are usually busy so on the weekends we don’t always get to do fun things, and during the week our focus is more on work.
The Morning
Another controversial topic, but my son and I are currently still co-sleeping for now. He still breastfeeds at night and it’s what’s working best for both of us to get the most sleep we can. The entire week before he has been sleeping terribly thanks to teething. Some nights he just didn’t want to go to bed until super late, and the days he went to bed normally he woke up super early, so I was looking forward to my husband taking him in the morning and allowing me to sleep in a little. By some miracle my son decided to let us sleep in that morning. He woke up early to eat and right when I was about to call my husband to grab him he crawls up my chest and went back to sleep. Not wanting to mess with a good thing I went back to sleep as well. Two hours later and we both woke up feeling refreshed, bright eyes, and bushy tailed. It was great!
I got to enjoy my coffee in bed while opening some presents and it really was a lovely way to wake up. My husband made his famous French toast for breakfast which is my favorite. I had wanted to go for a family hike/picnic, but the weather was in the 100s, so we ended up spending the morning chilling on the couch and watching cartoons. Of course, my husband ended up taking a small nap since he woke up early to be ready to take the baby off my hands… haha which was fine, but I did tease him mercilessly.
The Afternoon
While the weather kept us from our original plan I still wanted to get out of the house, so we decided to go shopping. Our mall just opened a Fabletics so we popped in there to check it out and I ended up getting a few pair of leggings. Yay! We also pursued Barnes and Nobles and I added a new board game to our collection. Finally, we ended up at Target. Is it even a mom shopping trip if you don’t stop into Target? We did the usual walking around and ended up getting a few toys for the baby… because I can’t help myself.
The Evening
After working years in the service industry, the last place I wanted to eat was a restaurant. Now don’t get me wrong I absolutely love going out to eat but there is just a different vibe during Mother’s Day and that vibe is chaos. So, for now I will enjoy a nice homecooked meal and be overjoyed.
For dinner we made steaks, roasted asparagus, and smashed potatoes. The steaks were literally perfection. We shared a bottle of wine and had a great relaxing meal. The potatoes were a new recipe and honestly didn’t turn out as well as I expected, but that didn’t dampen my meal at all. After dinner I popped a pan of brownies in the oven and went off to enjoy one of my new bath bombs. We ended the day with brownies topped with ice cream and some family TV time. It was pretty much perfect.
